Principal Surface Mining Engineer

• Lead Surface Mining Technical and Operational expertise at Gold Fields
• Drive and develop best practice for open pit mining
• Bring your Mine Engineering expertise and collaborative leadership

As part of our technical services team, you are a senior leader driving open pit mining process and performance across Gold Fields’ global operations.  

You’ll work closely with a diverse team to provide collaborative influence within the surface mining technical, operation, and asset management guidance and governance including risk management to allow the Group to achieve its strategic objectives.

This role is offered on a permanent full-time basis and will require global site travel to support local and international major capital projects.

What You’ll Do

• Provide surface mining leadership and guidance by delivering proactive safety, technical, and operational support across the Group.
• Develop and maintain mining standards and risk controls, including surface mining SOPs, technical requirements, contractual diligence, quality assurance, and risk management practices.
• Drive performance benchmarking and KPI implementation, including drill and blast strategy, tactics, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Support strategic and operational planning, contributing to business planning, mine studies, capital projects, contract reviews, and ore reserve/resource processes.
• Promote capability development and technology advancement by mentoring personnel and investigating, benchmarking, and implementing leading mining technologies.
• As required review, quantify, and develop plans to mitigate surface mining risks and ensure effective communication to all stakeholders.

What You’ll Bring

• Mining Engineering qualifications.
• Extensive demonstrated experience of relevant industry experience in both technical and operational capacities
• Knowledge of various surface mining operating environments in a variety of operational and technical roles
• Proven technical execution skills (data collection, analysis and fit for purpose modelling)
• Knowledge of various surface mining operating systems including fleet selection and performance benchmarking
• Project Management, continuous improvement, and management operating systems experience
• Capable of interacting at a technical level within different geographical Regions and at different levels within the organization
• Resilient, adaptable, and results-driven with a collaborative leadership style.
