We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.
Your Impact
As a Reliability Engineer, you’ll play a key role in lifting the performance, availability, and safety of our mobile fleet. Your technical insight will directly influence maintenance quality, reduce defects, and help drive a culture of reliability across operations. You’ll support decision‑making, improve how we maintain critical equipment, and ensure our fleet operates predictably to meet site objectives.
As part of our team, you will

- Support site teams with asset strategies, life‑cycle costing, and data‑driven maintenance decisions.
- Lead reliability programs including defect elimination and Maintain for Reliability (M4R).
- Analyse maintenance performance data to uncover opportunities for improvement.
- Conduct root cause analysis and share learnings across teams to strengthen reliability culture.
- Champion best‑practice maintenance and ensure reliability principles are embedded across the AM function.
- Work collaboratively with supervisors, technicians, and cross‑functional specialists to achieve safe, consistent outcomes.
Prerequisites for your success in this role
- Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering
- 5+ years’ experience in large‑scale mining or heavy industry.
- Strong background in heavy mobile equipment maintenance (e.g., Cat 785, 777, 992/993, 773, 336, 390).
- Skilled in fault finding, diesel engine diagnostics, and failure analysis/RCA.
- Ability to develop and improve maintenance strategies.
- Competent SAP user and proficient in MS Office.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills.
- High attention to detail and capable of working independently when required.
- PNG Class 6 Driver’s Licence.
Your work environment
This role is offered on a 21:21days only Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, PNG.
Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suite and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi‑Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
At Newmont, our commitment to diversity and inclusion ensures that everyone can work to their full potential, free from discrimination, while respecting the cultures, religions, and governance of the regions in which we operate. Guided by our values of Safety, Integrity, Sustainability, Responsibility, and Inclusion, our Lihir team – 90% of which are Papua New Guinean – is dedicated to creating a culturally rich and supportive environment where meaningful, long‑term connections can be formed within the industry.
We believe in the strength of our people and the positive impact we can create together. Newmont employees are rewarded with a competitive salary, flexible packaging options, and programs that recognize those who go above and beyond.
