Mount Isa Mines are currently seeking a skilled and experienced Geotechnical Engineer. This is residentially based position; FIFO is available for the right candidate. This position reports directly to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer.

About the role
Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Geotechnical Engineer provides essential geotechnical expertise to support the safe, efficient and compliant execution of the mine plan. The role delivers geotechnical input into development, infrastructure and stope design, ensures ground stability, manages geotechnical risk, and supports operational decision making across George Fisher Mine. The position interfaces closely with Technical Services, Operations and site leadership teams.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide geotechnical input into development, infrastructure and stope design.
- Reduce dilution and support economic recovery through effective geotechnical design.
- Design and justify ground support systems based on geology, stress and operational needs.
- Develop and manage backfill strategies, ensuring required fill strength is achieved.
- Collect, analyse and interpret geotechnical data in accordance with the GCMP.
- Conduct inspections to monitor ground conditions, stress damage and support performance.
- Maintain geotechnical maps, models, databases and KPI registries.
- Manage QA/QC for ground support systems including shotcrete, grout, cable bolts and paste.
- Analyse instrumentation data and implement controls when thresholds are exceeded.
- Investigate rock fall incidents and ensure accurate documentation is maintained.
- Prepare geotechnical parameters, notes and scoping documents within required timeframes.
- Collaborate with Technical Services and Operations while mentoring and supporting team members.
About you – skills and experience:
You will bring
- Degree in Engineering (preferred: Mining), or equivalent qualification.
- Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Geomechanics or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years underground hard rock mining experience, or 3+ years open cut/underground coal experience.
- Experience with mine design and geotechnical software (Deswik, Leapfrog, Rocscience).
- Rock mass classification systems.
- Geotechnical empirical design methods.
- Ground support design principles.
- Numerical modelling fundamentals.
- Underground mining methods and design considerations.
- Possesses solid critical thinking and practical problem-resolution abilities.
- Clear, effective communication skills.
