About the role
Reporting to the Superintendent Production Planning, you will provide specialist metallurgical planning and analytical expertise to support the safe, efficient and sustainable operation of Mount Isa Mines’ Concentrators & Smelters.
This role is ideally suited to a highly analytical metallurgist with strong computer skills, advanced data analysis and modelling capabilities, and experience in metallurgical accounting. You will work with complex production data to develop forecasts, optimise feed strategies, reconcile metal balances and identify opportunities to improve metallurgical performance.
Working within the Metallurgical Technical Services team, you will play a key role in production planning, metal accounting, feed optimisation and performance analysis. You will develop and maintain planning models, interrogate large data sets, investigate variances and translate complex technical information into meaningful insights that support operational and strategic decision-making.
Partnering closely with Operations, Planning, Maintenance, Refinery and Technical Services teams, you will help ensure production plans are robust, metallurgical data is accurate, and opportunities to improve metal recovery, productivity and cost performance are identified and realised.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain short, medium and long-term metallurgical production plans, forecasts and planning models to support the production objectives.
- Perform detailed metallurgical data analysis to identify trends, investigate performance deviations, understand process constraints and identify improvement opportunities.
- Maintain, improve and analyse metallurgical accounting systems, including metal balances, production reconciliation, inventory movements and reporting accuracy.
- Develop and maintain advanced spreadsheets, analytical tools and computer-based models to improve forecasting, scenario analysis, reporting and planning efficiency.
- Analyse concentrate characteristics, feed blends, inventories and process performance to support feed optimisation and maximise metal recovery.
- Conduct scenario modelling and sensitivity analysis to evaluate production options, assess operational constraints and quantify the impact of changes to feed, throughput, recovery and operating conditions.
- Reconcile forecast and actual performance, investigate variances and provide clear, data-driven explanations and recommendations to support business planning.
- Integrate data from multiple systems and sources to improve the accuracy, reliability and accessibility of metallurgical and production information.
- Prepare technical reports, dashboards, forecasts and presentations that communicate complex analytical findings clearly to both technical and operational stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Operations, Planning, Refinery and Technical Services to align production plans with operational capabilities, business priorities and metal accounting requirements.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities through better data utilisation, analytical methods, automation and process optimisation.
About you – skills and experience
You are a data-driven metallurgist who combines strong metallurgical fundamentals with advanced analytical and computer skills. You enjoy working with complex data, building models, investigating discrepancies and finding practical ways to improve production performance and decision-making.
You are comfortable working independently with large data sets, challenging assumptions and tracing variances back to their underlying causes. You can translate detailed technical analysis into clear, commercially relevant recommendations that support operational outcomes.
Qualifications, skills and experience
- Tertiary qualification in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience in metallurgical accounting, including metal balances, production reconciliation, inventory accounting and investigation of metal accounting variances.
- Advanced computer skills, particularly in Excel and data analysis, with the ability to develop sophisticated spreadsheets, automated reporting tools and analytical models.
- Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to interpret complex data and identify trends, inconsistencies and improvement opportunities.
- Experience in production planning, metallurgical forecasting, process modelling or performance analysis within a processing or heavy industrial environment.
- The ability to integrate and analyse data from multiple systems, validate data quality and develop reliable, repeatable reporting processes.
- Experience with data visualisation, reporting and analytical tools such as Power BI, SQL, Python or similar technologies will be highly regarded.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when working with production data, metal balances, forecasts and reconciliations.
- The ability to communicate technical findings clearly and work collaboratively with operational and technical stakeholders.
- Experience preparing technical reports and communicating recommendations to a wide range of stakeholders.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
- Commitment to safety, continuous improvement and operational excellence.
