The Battery Systems Engineer supports the safe and effective delivery of Fortescue’s battery electric heavy mobile equipment (HME) fleet by acting as a technically capable interface between Fortescue, OEMs, and operational teams.
The role interfaces with OEM design engineers to provide technical customer input and feedback.
The role ensures technical assurance, analysis, and delivery support, ensuring OEM battery systems meet Fortescue requirements through the design, manufacture, commissioning, and early operational phases. The role also supports OEMs to design fit for purpose solutions by providing Australian mine site and operational context to OEMs.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a technical interface between Fortescue, OEMs, and site teams to support delivery of battery electric HME
- Technically examine OEM battery system designs, including assumptions and performance claims, through engineering review and analysis against project requirements
- Review and provide assurance on OEM technical documentation, safety cases, and compliance evidence
- Support battery system performance analysis including thermal behaviour, degradation, charging interfaces, and operational limits
- Understand and evaluate mechanical, electrical and electronic battery performance, durability and reliability impacts at vehicle-level
- Assist with commissioning, site deployment, and early operational support of battery electric fleets
- Support early fault finding, troubleshooting, and root cause investigations in collaboration with OEMs and operational teams
- Collaborate with projects, operations, maintenance, and safety teams to ensure safe and effective system integration
- Contribute to continuous improvement, standards development, and incorporation of operational learnings.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline
- Strong experience with EV battery system architectures, control systems, and high-voltage DC systems
- Knowledge of lithium-ion battery technologies, battery management systems (BMS), thermal management, and charging systems
- Experience working with heavy mobile equipment (HME) and mining operations environments
- Proven capability working with OEMs in technical or engineering roles, including critical review of OEM designs and specifications
- Experience supporting commissioning, early operations, and field-based troubleshooting of complex systems
- Strong systems engineering foundation, including feature engineering methodologies and system-level failure analysis
- Understanding of high-voltage and functional safety standards, including review of safety cases, hazard analyses, and compliance documentation
- Knowledge of operational reliability, maintainability, asset lifecycle management, and production/manufacturing considerations
- Proficiency in project management tools and techniques, with the ability to manage technical deliverables in complex environments.
