About the Role

Reporting to the Underground Manager, the Alternate Underground Manager at the growing KCGM Fimiston Underground mine provides leadership and direction to the operational and technical teams to safely and effectively execute the mining plan. The Alternate UGM will be the appointed first class mine manager and be the primary responsible person over the weekends. Working an 8/6 roster, 12-hour days only. This position can be either residential or FIFO.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly control, manage, and supervise the operational and technical services team, including external mining contractors to safely achieve our agreed business plans.
  • Oversee and contribute to the development of internal mining strategies with assistance from the geology department, planning and production engineering teams to deliver the budget mining physicals on plan and on cost targets.
  • Champion and lead multiple capital projects that provide key infrastructure upgrades inline with the staged growth of the operation.
  • Manage and direct the underground technical team to produce the plans and designs in line with the 12-week mining schedule to deliver monthly production that achieves the budgeted tonnes and ounces.
  • Champion a safety-first culture by proactively identifying and mitigating mining risks, conducting thorough incident investigation and driving real actions to prevent re-occurrence or mitigate consequences.
  • Maintain regular communication with Senior Site leaders all the way through to mine personnel to sharing updates, direction, and daily, weekly and monthly performance targets.
  • Maintain open and positive communication with other parts of the Mining Operation.
  • Develop personnel directly reporting to this position through coaching, training, and regular appraisals.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership through well-developed communication skills, including managing for performance and the ability to communicate mining operations information to management and site visitors.
  • Analyse and report on mining operational performance to identify any early interventions required to maintain performance.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects to challenge the operational status quo and seek out improvements that will enable the planned growth of the mine.

The specifics

  • WA Underground First Class Mine Managers Certificate of Competency.
  • Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Demonstrable experience in underground mine management at minimum Senior Engineer level.
  • Experience working with historical voids and remnant mining areas is highly regarded.
  • Underground production and planning experience in a mechanised hard-rock underground mine.
  • Proven leadership and communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Mining Work Health and Safety Regulations and Act.
  • High level mine planning skills.
  • Ability to prepare reports and good analytical skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Current "C" Class Western Australian Driver's Licence.
