Superintendent – Metallurgy

Stellar Recruitment is partnering with Glencore to appoint a Superintendent – Metallurgy at McArthur River Mine in the Northern Territory. Located approximately 970 kilometres south-east of Darwin, McArthur River Mine is one of Australia’s largest zinc-lead operations. The site incorporates an open-cut mine, processing facilities and a logistics network transporting concentrate to the Bing Bong Loading Facility for export to customers around the world.

This is an opportunity to take a senior leadership role within a technically complex processing operation and influence plant performance, recovery, product quality and continuous improvement.

The role: Reporting to the Manager – Metallurgy and Port Operations, the Superintendent – Metallurgy will lead the site’s metallurgical, process-control and laboratory functions.

You will be accountable for ensuring metallurgical systems operate safely and effectively while delivering planned production volumes and product-quality outcomes. The position will provide technical leadership to the metallurgy and laboratory teams and work closely with processing, maintenance, technical and HSE stakeholders.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Monitor and optimise plant metallurgical performance and process-control systems.
• Identify performance constraints and coordinate practical remedial actions.
• Lead the implementation of new process systems, equipment and plant upgrades.
• Drive improvements in recovery, throughput, stability and concentrate quality.
• Ensure the metallurgical laboratory operates safely, efficiently and in accordance with required standards.
• Provide technical direction, coaching and development to metallurgical and laboratory personnel.
• Lead, mentor and manage a multidisciplinary metallurgy and laboratory team.
• Contribute to annual business plans, operating budgets, capital budgets and performance reporting.
• Manage the availability, consumption and cost-effective use of major plant consumables.
• Support plant trials, technical investigations and improvement projects.
• Work collaboratively with production, maintenance and HSE teams to deliver safe and sustainable operational outcomes.

About You: To succeed in this position, you will bring:

• Tertiary qualifications in Metallurgical, Chemical or Process Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Substantial practical experience within mineral-processing or metallurgical plant operations.
• Strong knowledge of metallurgical processes, plant optimisation and process-control systems.
• Experience in complex base-metal concentrators or flotation operations will be highly regarded.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing metallurgists, laboratory personnel or processing technical teams.
• A sound understanding of metallurgical laboratory practices, sampling, analysis and quality control.
• Experience delivering process-improvement initiatives, plant trials, equipment upgrades or operational projects.
• Exposure to operating budgets, capital planning, cost control and technical performance reporting.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and decision-making capability.
• The ability to translate technical findings into clear operational actions.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills across operational and technical functions.
