About the Role

As a Specialist Data Engineer, you will contribute to the design, development, and support of reliable, scalable data pipelines and engineering solutions that deliver trusted, secure, and business-ready data for analytics, reporting, operational use, and emerging AI-enabled use cases.

Role Purpose & Pivotal Experiences:

As a Specialist Data Engineer, you contribute to Digital initiatives that improve safety, productivity, operational performance, and business decision-making at BHP.

• The Specialist Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and operating scalable, reliable, and secure data pipelines and platforms that deliver trusted, high-quality data for analytics, reporting, operational processes, and digital products.
• The role works closely with Data Modellers, Data Domain Owners, Analytics Engineers, and Platform teams to implement data ingestion, transformation, and orchestration solutions that meet enterprise standards for performance, reliability, and compliance.
• The Specialist Data Engineer applies strong software and data engineering practices to ensure datasets are performant, observable, and production-ready across cloud and on prem platforms, supporting both traditional analytics and emerging AI-enabled data use cases.
• The role contributes to improved data availability, timeliness, reliability, and scalability, and supports the delivery of AI-ready pipelines through robust engineering patterns, automation, and DevOps practices.

About You

Core Skills & Experience Focus

• Strong understanding of data pipelines, ETL/ELT patterns, and data integration architectures
• Hands-on experience building and maintaining batch and streaming data pipelines
• Strong SQL plus practical experience with Python or similar programming languages
• Experience integrating data from APIs, event streams, operational systems, and third party sourcesUnderstanding of data consumption patterns for analytics, reporting, and digital product
• Experience with cloud and MPP platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Hadoop/Spark)Exposure to distributed processing technologies such as Spark or Impala
• Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow or Luigi
• Awareness of streaming architectures using Kafka or similar technologies
• Strong grounding in software engineering best practices (testing, version control, documentation)
• Experience with CI/CD, Git-based workflows, and DevOps practices
• Exposure to Infrastructure as Code tools such as TerraformOperational mindset, including monitoring, alerting, and incident response for data platforms
• Bachelor’s degree required; Computer Science, MIS, or Engineering preferred
• Minimum 3 years of experience working in Data Modelling Engineering or architecture role Experience working in Agile, Scrum, or Continuous Delivery environments
• Self-motivated with strong problem-solving and analytical skillsAbility to collaborate effectively across engineering, analytics, and business teamsFlexibility to changes in work direction as the project develops
