About the Role

UGL is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer, Primary Systems to join our Utilities engineering team in North Sydney. Reporting to the Team Lead Electrical Engineer, Primary Systems, you will provide conceptual and detailed primary design for HV substations, transmission, BESS, solar and wind farm projects.

As a senior member of the team, you will lead design packages, check and verify engineering outputs, coordinate interfaces and provide technical direction to other engineers and drafting personnel. You will also work closely with project, tendering, construction and business development teams to deliver practical, constructable solutions that meet client, safety, quality, programme and budget requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead primary design packages and coordinate engineering deliverables across tender and project phases
  • Develop and review substation configurations, plant layouts, busbar systems, electrical clearances, underground services and equipment specifications
  • Undertake or oversee HV cable, earthing, lightning protection, insulation coordination, EMF, corona and lighting design
  • Check and verify engineering work for technical accuracy, compliance, constructability and interface coordination
  • Plan and monitor design activities against delivery schedules, budgets and project priorities
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, designers and drafting personnel
  • Support customer and site visits, procurement, construction, commissioning, tendering and technical evaluations as required

About you

  • A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent tertiary engineering qualification
  • At least eight years’ experience in the primary design of HV plants or substations
  • Proven experience leading primary substation design packages across major utility, mining or renewable energy projects
  • Relevant experience that may include projects for clients such as Transgrid or Powerlink, as well as large-scale BESS, solar or wind farm developments
  • Strong technical capability in HV cable design, earthing, lightning protection, insulation coordination, EMF and lighting design
  • Professional-level knowledge of primary design software such as CYMCAP and CDEGS, with Chartered Professional Engineer status preferred
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, problem-solving and leadership skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and collaborate across disciplines
