Our Opportunity

The Senior Design Engineer will be responsible for working with a team of multi-disciplinary professionals to support and complete technical assessments, design and technical assurance for a wide range of water projects across Fortescue’s mine sites and project portfolio. 

The Senior Design Engineer will take a lead role in compiling water infrastructure designs, monitoring design progress and providing review and guidance to mechanical design engineers in the team according to the relevant Australian and Fortescue standards to ensure safe and cost-effective project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform hydraulic modelling and design of pipelines, borefields, pump stations, ponds, tanks, and associated water infrastructure systems
  • Prepare and compile comprehensive engineering deliverables, including construction drawings, pipeline schematics, GAs, P&IDs, and equipment selection
  • Develop high-quality design reports, technical memoranda, scopes of work, and specifications, clearly summarising recommendations and outcomes
  • Facilitate design reviews, including field inspections, stakeholder alignment, and compliance with basis of design criteria
  • Contribute to capital cost estimates through quantity calculations and material take-offs (MTOs)
  • Coordinate operational readiness requirements to support smooth transition from design to construction and commissioning
  • Monitor project schedules, ensuring compliance and escalating risks or delays as required
  • Provide construction-phase support through technical queries (TQs) and updates to design documentation
  • Produce equipment data sheets, evaluate vendor proposals, and ensure technical and commercial compliance
  • Ensure all designs meet statutory, project, and industry standards, while maintaining clear communication and providing technical support across multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering (preferred), or Chemical Engineering or Civil Engineering recognised by Engineers Australia
  • Minimum of 8 years mechanical piping systems and pipeline design experience, ideally within the mining industry and/or engineering consultancy experience
  • Clear communication skills, written and verbal
  • Understanding of Australian and common international standards and regulatory authority requirements in the mining and water industries
  • Ability to travel to site if required (short trips for scoping and stakeholder engagement)
  • Competency in Visio, Arc map (preferable)
  • A problem-solving mentality with the ability to "think outside of the box"
