About the Role
As a Rail Controller, you will be a key part of our Integrated Operations team, playing a vital role in the safe, reliable, and efficient movement of rail mounted equipment across the BHP Rail Network. This is a highly impactful position that calls for strong process discipline, sound judgement, and a proactive mindset to ensure the highest levels of safety compliance. By optimising rail movements and collaborating closely with stakeholders, you will directly contribute to achieving daily and weekly production targets while supporting a strong safety first culture.
Reporting to the Rail Control Supervisor, your responsibility will be to ensure efficient planning, coordinating and execution of both Mainline and Yard movements.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure strict compliance with the Rail Safety Management Plan, Rail Safeworking documentation, and Safety Critical Communication procedures.
- Safely plan, coordinate and execute Mainline and Yard rail movements, ensuring effective control of Safeworking activities and movement rail-mounted equipment.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver safe, efficient operations aligned with production targets.
- Interface with Rail Network Coordinators, including Track Maintenance and Rail Operations to support aligned and safe execution of operational plans.
- Proactively identify, escalate and manage hazards, risks and operational disruptions impacting the daily schedule.
- Identify and contribute improvement opportunities in operational processes, procedures and ways of working.
About You
- Demonstrate a strong safety‑first mindset, consistently applying disciplined processes to support safe and reliable Rail network operations.
- Bring experience in Rail Control or heavy haul rail operations, with the ability to operate confidently in a dynamic control or operations environment.
- Are a proactive problem solver, able to analyse information, anticipate issues, and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Work collaboratively and inclusively, building positive relationships and communicating clearly with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Maintain a positive, resilient attitude, staying focused and effective while managing competing priorities in a high-pressure environment.
- Show strong attention to detail and computer literacy, supporting accurate planning, scheduling and execution.
- Are motivated to learn and improve, actively contributing ideas that strengthen processes, teamwork and ways of working.
Lifestyle Roster
This position will work on our Lifestyle Roster, working a pattern of days and nights, with a block of days off at the end of each swing.
Employees on this roster enjoy two full weekends off out of four and will align to the following shift rotation: 2D2N5X, 2D3N4X, 3D2N5X. Shifts are 12.5 hours including handover and you will benefit from additional shift allowances, as part of your remuneration package. As an added benefit, those on a Lifestyle Roster will also enjoy an additional week of annual leave per year.
