The Opportunity
The Principal Tailings Engineer to provide technical leadership in the design and management of tailings storage across the MinRes business, delivering leading-practice designs, regulatory compliance, and operational risk management. Provide technical direction, mentoring, and leadership to the Tailings Engineering team and ensure alignment with corporate governance processes, industry standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain corporate tailings governance framework, standards, and guidelines.
- Lead formulation, review, and approval of technical designs for tailings storage facilities at active and future sites.
- Ensure designs and operations comply with relevant regulatory requirements, industry guidance, and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).
- Oversee technical assessments, risk reviews, stability analyses, materials characterisation, and operational monitoring systems.
- Provide guidance for tailings facility lifecycle planning — including concept, design, construction, operational monitoring, closure, and rehabilitation.
- Undertake site technical audits for operational compliance to governance frameworks.
- Improve performance through the introduction of new procedures, technologies, and systems for design and monitoring.
- Collaborate across functions (Operations, Environment, Safety, Mine Planning) to ensure integrated delivery of designs.
- Manage and coordinate external specialist consultants, ensuring deliverables strengthen operational safety and efficiency
What is required?
- Tertiary degree in Civil, Mining, or Environmental Engineering or related technical discipline.
- Post-graduate qualifications in Tailings or Geotechnical Engineering advantageous.
- Extensive experience in tailings facility design, management, and governance in mining environments.
- Proven leadership of technical teams and direct involvement in large and complex tailings design projects.
- Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, tailings material properties, and landform design.
- Proficiency with geotechnical design software (e.g., Muk3D, GeoStudio, RocScience).
- Demonstrated understanding of GISTM and relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Experience managing consultants and contractors delivering technical designs.
