About the Role

Prominent Hill is a copper-gold mine, a long-life asset, that is part of the BHP South Australia copper province.  BHP is a global company with operations in Australia, North and South America across 5 different commodities.

Reporting to the Superintendent Geotechnical & Backfill, this role offers a team leadership opportunity with the team that provides geotechnical input in stope designs, ground support assessments and designs, QAQC of ground support and geotechnical monitoring and ultimately enabling safe execution of mine plans.

This role is based at Prominent Hill on an 8/6 FIFO roster from Adelaide.

The Lead Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for leading a team of engineers to execute:

  • All requirements of the ground control management plan (GCMP) including data collection, tactical ground support design, rock mass monitoring & QAQC
  • Ensuring adherence, and regular review and updates to geotechnical management plans
  • Management of geotechnical databases
  • Internal auditing of geotechnical practices ensuring consistency with regulatory frameworks and BHP Copper SA strategy
  • Oversee risk assessments and trigger action response plans (TARPs)
  • Ongoing mentoring, coaching and guidance to graduates, junior engineers, and technicians
  • Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to drive value add projects
  • Consistent communications to key stakeholders with respect to geotechnical hazard management
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of geotechnical practices and systems
  • Lead and manage underground geotechnical projects, ensuring timelines, budgets and quality standard are met
  • Prepare technical reports, scopes of work, and business cases for geotechnical initiatives

About You

  • Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience in underground mining geotechnical roles.
  • Proven ability to manage small to medium geotechnical projects in a mining or construction setting
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver and drive safe geotechnical practices
  • Experience managing a team of technical professionals
  • Experience using geotechnical and geological software (IMS suite, mXrap, Rocscience suite, Leapfrog Geo, Deswik)
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and reporting skills
  • Previous exposure to rock mass characterisation through empirical analysis, numerical modelling, geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring methods
  • Previous exposure to both Underground and Open Pit Geotechnical Engineering
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills
