About the Company

UGL is a leading provider of engineering, construction and maintenance services, delivering some of Australia's most critical infrastructure projects. As we continue to grow our Transport & Technology business, we are seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead engineering and design outcomes across major transport, technology and critical infrastructure projects.

About the Role

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for managing the design function across complex projects, ensuring engineering risk, quality, scope, schedule and budget requirements are achieved. You will work closely with project teams, clients, technology partners and key stakeholders to deliver innovative and fit-for-purpose solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design and engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage design quality, governance, assurance and compliance activities.
  • Oversee design reviews, verification and validation processes.
  • Ensure design outputs meet customer, operational, safety and project requirements.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets and resource allocation to achieve delivery objectives.
  • Support tender development and provide technical leadership during bid and proposal activities.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to project teams and stakeholders on technical matters.
  • Drive collaboration between internal engineering teams, technology partners, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Identify and manage technical risks, ensuring appropriate mitigation strategies are implemented.
  • Mentor engineers and foster a high-performance culture focused on continuous improvement and innovation.

About You

You are an experienced engineering or technology leader who thrives in complex project environments and enjoys balancing strategic oversight with hands-on technical leadership.

You will bring:

  • Degree qualifications in Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience delivering engineering, technology or infrastructure projects.
  • Possess or meets the requirements to be Registered Professional Engineer, Queensland (RPEQ)
  • Demonstrated experience leading design and engineering teams within complex project environments.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills.
  • Proven ability to manage project scope, budget, schedule and risk.
  • Experience working within highly regulated or safety-critical industries.
  • A collaborative leadership style and commitment to engineering excellence.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a focus on delivery outcomes.

Technical Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be highly regarded:

  • Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
  • Operational Technology (OT) and critical operational systems.
  • Systems engineering and systems assurance.
  • Software engineering, DevSecOps and cloud-based solutions.
  • Data analytics, business intelligence and digital technologies.
  • CCTV, access control, public address and communications systems.
  • SCADA, control systems and condition monitoring technologies.
  • Communications, fibre and networking infrastructure.
  • Rail, road, tunnel, defence, aviation or other safety-critical environments.
