Flexible for this role to be based in Sydney or Melbourne.

About the Role

Leading the commercial function across major projects, ensuring strong governance, financial performance, contract compliance and effective project controls. You will work closely with project leadership teams to optimise commercial outcomes, manage risk and support successful project delivery.

The Commercial Manager will mentor and supervise Project Managers and Contract administrators in maintaining commercial compliance and adherence to the UGL Project Governance model – UGL Way. This role will also be required to use appropriate analysis to develop and then implement effective solutions to complex commercial issues relating to this project.

The Commercial Manager will also ensure that financial governance is maintained, particularly around strong focus on the cash position of the project and the timely payment of all milestone payments to return a consistently positive cash outcome on this project.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of the Commercial function including the development of, implementation and then delivery of strong Commercial governance and controls.
  • Provide leadership, direction, supervision and inspirational management to all team members (direct & indirect).
  • Direct interface with the customer at senior levels. Must be able to maintain positive working relationships in an often adversarial environment.
  • Must be able to lead this project across the CIMIC group by ensuring that the leadership teams from the Joint Venture partners are effective in how they maintain the joint venture and to ensure that the commercial positions of both joint venture partners are managed effectively.
  • Develop, implement and then maintain strong project commercial disciplines to ensure that the Project leads can exercise decisions based on correct financial information.
  • Set expectations and governance with Procurement lead to ensure most cost effective supply chain with inventory control and appropriate payment schedule to maintain positive cash flow
  • Constantly review Contract Obligations and UGL workflows for compliance.
  • Responsible for reviewing RFT’s and proposed Contract terms to ensure they align with UGL Policy and deliver the best possible commercial advantage to UGL.
  • Responsible for reviewing all major Subcontract Documents to ensure that critical pass on clauses are included to the best possible advantage of UGL.
  • Responsible for the management of and execution of any major claims – with either Clients or Contractors, and work with Legal on any actions against UGL on relation to this Project.
  • Ensure compliance with all record keeping requirements.
  • Undertake any adhoc projects, initiatives, tasks as directed by the Project Director.

About You

  • 15 years’ experience in Finance and Commercial leadership roles, with Major Projects background.
  • Experience using SAP and/or Cost management systems
  • Proven experience leading commercial functions within construction, transport, infrastructure, defence, utilities or other safety-critical environments.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex commercial risks, claims and financial outcomes on large-scale projects.
  • Ability to influence senior leaders, build high-performing teams and drive commercial excellence.
