Job Description
UGL is seeking an experienced Welding Supervisor to join our team on The Gorgon Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facility incorporates one of the world's largest CCS systems, designed to capture naturally occurring carbon dioxide (CO₂) from offshore gas reservoirs and permanently store it deep underground. The PMP will expand the system's water management capability, enabling increased CO₂ injection rates and supporting long-term emissions reduction objectives.
About the Role
Reporting to the SMP Superintendent, the Welding Supervisor will provide technical leadership and frontline supervision of welding and fabrication activities across the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Liaise closely with Client Representatives, Engineering, Quality, HSE, and Construction teams.
- Establish and maintain project welding requirements in accordance with the Welding Management Plan.
- Coordinate and supervise welding personnel across multiple work fronts.
- Lead welding training initiatives and maintain workforce welding qualifications and certifications.
- Provide technical advice and guidance on welding processes, standards, specifications, and best practices.
- Ensure all welding activities comply with approved WPSs, ITPs, drawings, and project specifications.
- Audit welding processes to identify inefficiencies and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor corrective actions and ensure effective close-out to prevent recurrence of quality issues.
- Promote and maintain a strong safety-first culture throughout all project activities.
- Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Management Systems.
- Coordinate inspection and testing activities and manage welding documentation requirements.
- Monitor productivity and performance to ensure project schedule requirements are achieved.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders to safely deliver construction outcomes to the highest quality standards.
Mandatory Requirements
- AS 1796 Certificate 10 – Welding Supervisor
- Trade Qualification in Boiler making, Welding, Engineering Fabrication, or related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience supervising welding activities within construction, mining, oil & gas, LNG, energy, infrastructure, or heavy industrial environments.
- Strong understanding of welding standards, welding quality systems, and inspection requirements.
- Sound knowledge of welding processes including GTAW (TIG), and MMAW.
- Ability to understand and interpret weld procedures, engineering drawings, isometrics, fabrication drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Strong leadership, planning, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organisation.
- Strong problem-solving capability and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- A proactive and results-oriented approach with a commitment to continuous improvement.
Desirable Qualifications
- CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector or Welding Australia equivalent (IWIS, IWS, etc)
- Experience working on LNG, gas processing, major projects, shutdowns, maintenance, carbon capture, or energy transition projects.
- Experience working with piping systems, pressure equipment, structural steel, and quality documentation requirements.
- Experience with Super Duplex Stainless Steel.
- Experience using a MAL 4 welding data logger.
- Experience in welding small bore piping as low as DN15
