The Opportunity

We have an exciting Scholarship Opportunity for an enthusiastic Undergraduate Mechanical Engineer to join our Minerals Technologies team with Downer’s Energy & Utilities. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated engineering student to gain hands-on industry experience while contributing to the delivery of complex projects across critical infrastructure sectors.

Working alongside experienced Mechanical Engineers, Project Managers and multidisciplinary design teams, you'll support a range of engineering activities including technical investigations, design development, equipment selection, documentation, project coordination and commissioning support.

Based in Carrara, QLD or Adelaide, SA this role offers valuable exposure to the full project lifecycle, helping you build practical engineering knowledge while continuing your academic studies.

About the Mick Hagarty Memorial Scholarship:

The Mick Hagarty Memorial Scholarship was established to honour a long-term employee of Mineral Technologies who sadly passed away in 2022. Mick was a dedicated mechanical engineer who thrived on technical challenges and had a real thirst for knowledge. He gave tireless and generous support to wave after wave of ambitious young engineers.

The scholarship provides financial support along with paid vacation work, so you can get a feel for the profession by working alongside our engineering team during university holidays.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a curious, collaborative and safety-focused individual who is eager to learn and develop their engineering career.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd year of a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 5.0 on a 7 point scale (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrate financial need or be experiencing financial hardship
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • A willingness to learn, ask questions and develop professionally

Applicant Screening

The successful candidate may be required to complete pre-employment checks, including reference checks, work eligibility verification and drug & alcohol screening.

In this role, you will:

  • Assist with technical investigations and engineering calculations.
  • Support the development of engineering designs, specifications, scopes of work and technical documentation.
  • Contribute to project deliverables and design reports.
  • Assist with procurement, scheduling, cost control and project coordination activities.
  • Liaise with vendors and stakeholders to support project outcomes
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and learn from experienced engineering professionals.
