About the Role

As a Technician Water Operations, you will be responsible for the safe operation, monitoring and maintenance of potable water treatment, wastewater treatment and water distribution infrastructure across BHP's Iron Ore operations. Working within a highly regulated environment, you will ensure water treatment systems meet Department of Health requirements, environmental obligations and BHP standards while supporting reliable water services to remote mining villages and operational sites.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operate and monitor potable water and wastewater treatment plants and associated infrastructure.
  • Conduct routine plant inspections, performance monitoring and fault identification.
  • Perform water quality testing and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and BHP environmental standards.
  • Report hazards, incidents and equipment defects, and support corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and facilitate maintenance activities to ensure asset reliability and availability.
  • Maintain accurate operational records, technical documentation and work management system updates.
  • Monitor asset performance, analyse operational data and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Work collaboratively with maintenance teams, supervisors and contractors to achieve business objectives.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and Zero Harm culture.
  • Operate remote water treatment facilities with a high degree of accountability, integrity and autonomy.

About you

Essential Qualifications, Licences & Certifications

  • Certificate III (or higher) in Water Operations / Water Treatment.
  • Current Australian C-Class Driver's Licence.
  • Previous experience operating potable water and/or wastewater treatment plants.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and adherence to safety systems, procedures and standards.
  • Experience operating and monitoring water treatment and wastewater treatment processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment while also operating independently in remote locations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and sound problem-solving and fault-finding capabilities.
  • Experience completing inspections, monitoring equipment condition and reporting operational issues.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and complete operational documentation with basic computer literacy, including the use of iPads and digital work management systems.
  • Approximately 3 years' experience within drinking water and/or wastewater treatment operations.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Chlorine Gas handling or operational experience.
  • Chlorine Gas certification/training.

Experience with:

  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems, Nanofiltration systems, UV disinfection systems, Media filtration systems, Chlorine Gas disinfection systems
  • Wastewater treatment experience, including aerobic and anoxic biological processes.
  • Conducting field laboratory testing and using analytical instruments,  maintenance management systems such as FIORI/SAP.
  • Implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Working in remote mining, utilities, resources or industrial environments.
