Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

This is a site-based role at Tanami Operations in the Northern Territory, working in a challenging remote environment. You will interface daily with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, HSE, and project stakeholders.

The role involves a FIFO schedule with 14/14 or 8/6 opportunities available.  Approved departure locations for the point of hire are Darwin, Alice Springs, Perth, and Brisbane.

Who we’re looking!

As an Instrumentation Technician, you will deliver safe, reliable and efficient instrumentation and control services across Newmont Tanami’s fixed plant operations, including the calibration, maintenance and repair of process control systems. This includes supporting field instrumentation, control valves, PLCs, SCADA systems, analysers and associated control infrastructure across crushers, conveyors, Koepe winders and processing circuits, ensuring accurate, reliable and optimised plant performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering instrumentation and control maintenance, calibration, fault‑finding and repair activities across fixed plant surface and underground assets, including PLCs, SCADA, control valves, analysers and automation systems, in accordance with Australian standards and site requirements.
  • Diagnosing and resolving instrumentation, control system, network, hardware, software and telemetry faults, and implementing approved minor temporary and permanent changes to ICS applications to support reliable operations.
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records by confirming time against job numbers and documenting calibration results and fault history to support reporting, compliance and maintenance planning.
  • Monitoring and assessing control system performance and instrumentation reliability, identifying issues early and contributing improvement ideas that enhance system performance, safety and efficiency.
  • Working safely and collaboratively by completing risk assessments, following all site safety processes, participating in toolbox meetings and inspections, stopping unsafe work, and maintaining a clean, organised work environment.

Capabilities Required

  • Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control & Electrical Trade qualification with a valid NT Electrical Licence, supported by fixed plant maintenance experience in mining or as well as a valid driver’s licence.
  • Demonstrated experience with crusher & conveyor systems, Koepe & Drum Winder & Materials Handling system essential.
  • Proven capability with PLC and SCADA platforms such as Schneider Modicon and Citect Plant/SCADA, with PLC knowledge, control loop experience and exposure to ABB ACS Winder Control and industrial automation regarded as advantageous.
  • Strong diagnostic, calibration and fault‑finding skills, with proficiency in SAP or other CMMS platforms.
  • Hold relevant high‑risk work certifications (Working at Heights, Confined Space, HV Switching, LV Rescue/CPR), and demonstrating clear communication, initiative and composure under pressure with a strong safety focus.
