About the role

We are currently seeking an Operations Supervisor to lead and manage the day-to-day activities of our Rail Operations team, including Train Examiners and Locomotive Drivers, across both production and service train operations.

This role is critical in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of rail services supporting production, maintenance, and logistics activities from mine to port. This includes fault response, recovery activities, and the operation of service trains such as ballast, fuel, rail and other work trains.

As an Operations Supervisor, you will provide strong leadership, drive operational excellence, and foster a positive, safety focused culture while maintaining productivity and continuous improvement across rail operations.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong safety leadership, clear communication, and the ability to lead teams in a dynamic operational environment where priorities can change quickly.

Reporting to the Superintendent Rail Operations, you will:

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of Rail Operations personnel across production and service train activities
  • Ensure strict adherence to all Rio Tinto standards, policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with statutory obligations and rail safety regulations.
  • Plan, organise, and oversee rail operational activities to maximise productivity while minimising cost and environmental impact.
  • Actively promote, communicate, and role‑model positive safety culture and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with internal functions and key stakeholders to achieve operational goals.
  • Manage staffing levels and resource allocation to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Monitor fatigue compliance, rostering, and productivity of rail operations personnel.
  • Manage incidents and operational issues in a timely, effective, and professional manner.
