About the Role

Collaborative, learning-focused team environment Reporting to the Superintendent Asset Performance Below Rail, and supporting the Senior Specialist in this team, this role in the Rail Network Capacity (RNC) team plays a key supporting role in ensuring the reliability, safety and long-term performance of our below-rail infrastructure. Working alongside senior engineers, operations team, and planning specialists, you will contribute technical insights, analysis and problem-solving across a wide range of below rail asset types and lifecycle stages.

In this role, you will support technical studies, improvement initiatives, challenge the “norm” and conduct performance reviews that help shape how our rail network is managed and optimised. You will work closely with internal stakeholders to understand operational needs, respond to technical queries and assist with asset planning, modelling and performance reporting. Your work will contribute to development of strategy, master planning, risk assessments, performance benchmarking and engineering investigations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support technical rail studies and improvement initiatives, assisting with analysis, data preparation, field observations and reporting to contribute to the delivery of the rail strategy.
  • Work closely with internal functions and operational teams to understand day‑to‑day requirements, support with providing timely technical input for below‑rail asset issues.
  • Assist in the development and coordination of asset strategies and portfolio plans by gathering data, preparing documentation and contributing technical insights.
  • Help with annual performance reconciliation and asset planning activities across RNC and Rail, including preparing inputs and validating datasets.
  • Provide support for supply chain modelling, business case development and trade‑off assessments, focusing on data analysis and scenario evaluation.
  • Serve as a supporting point of contact for below‑rail technical and operational matters, escalating more complex issues to senior specialists as required.
  • Contribute to investigations and engineering problem-solving, performing data review, undertaking field inspections where required and facilitating technical write‑ups.
  • Assist in generating inputs for life‑of‑asset planning, master planning and strategic asset plans, including system modelling and forecasting.
  • Support the development and maintenance of long‑term rail strategy documents, standards, and planning procedures.

About You

  • Degree qualified in Engineering (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or similar, with relevant rail experience)
  • 3-5 years’ experience in rail infrastructure
  • Proven experience in rail, preference for heavy haul operations.
  • Track maintenance, project execution and/or operational environment knowledge is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated analytical mindset and ability to translate complex datasets into practical solutions for engineering and operational challenges.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication with strong stakeholder engagement capability
  • High level of attention to detail and process accuracy
  • Able to work autonomously, proactively, and meet strict deadlines and targets
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
