Your impact

Reporting to the Director, Health, Safety and Environment, in the position of Specialist, Environmental Projects and Permitting, you will lead site environmental permitting and assessment activities including regulatory compliance and delivery of high-quality technical studies, environmental projects and improvement initiatives, in collaboration with consultants, regulators and internal stakeholders.

As part of our team you will

    • Lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of environmental permitting and approval processes for site activities and projects in alignment with Newmont’s permitting and approvals standard and guidance
    • Manage environmental assessment programs, including scoping, scheduling, consultant engagement, and regulatory submissions
    • Coordinate environmental project activities at the site level, including engagement of consultants, preparation of documentation, and oversight of deliverables to ensure quality and compliance
    • Oversee field programs and data collection associated with environmental assessments and studies to ensure technical quality and alignment with permitting and project requirements
    • Review consultant reports and assessment outcomes for technical accuracy and consistency with regulatory and corporate standards
    • Coordinate communication and engagement with regulators to support timely review and approval of environmental submissions
    • Monitor progress of permits and approvals, maintaining accurate records of conditions, deliverables, and compliance obligations for alignment with Tanami’s permitting approach
    • Facilitate and coordinate reviews of environmental assessments, permits, and project documentation by internal and external subject matter experts to ensure quality and alignment with regulatory requirements
    • Deliver and support environmental projects, programs and improvement initiatives that enhance site environmental performance and compliance
    • Prepare reports, briefings, and presentations on permitting status, environmental assessments, and project performance to support management routines (i.e. MPR).

Prerequisites for your success in the role

    • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline
    • Knowledge of environmental impact assessment (EIA) processes including baseline study design, impact evaluation, and regulatory submission requirements
    • Understanding of environmental permitting and approvals frameworks, including local, provincial/state, and national regulatory systems
    • Knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements relevant to environmental management, land disturbance, water, waste, and air quality
    • Understanding of mining and processing operations and the associated environmental risks, approvals, and management systems
    • Experience in project management fundamentals, including planning, contractor engagement, and delivery of environmental projects
    • Proficiency in environmental monitoring, principles and data quality assurance for field programs and assessments
    • Seasoned practitioner in stakeholder engagement and regulatory processes related to environmental approvals and compliance
    • Skills in technical writing and review of environmental documentation including EIA reports, management plans and regulatory submissions
    • Exposure to change management, risk management, and continuous improvement processes applied to environmental systems in the mining industry
    • Full and unrestricted eligibility for employment in Australia.

Your work environment

Newmont has fully owned and operated the Tanami mine since 2002. The mine operates in the remote Tanami Desert of Australia. The mine and plant are located on Aboriginal freehold land that is owned by the Warlpiri people and managed on their behalf by the Central Desert Aboriginal Lands Trust. Tanami is a fly-in-fly-out operation in one of Australia’s most remote locations. Tanami is 270 km from its closest neighbours, the remote Aboriginal community of Yuendumu.

This position will be offered on a maximum fixed-term employment basis working on site at Newmont’s Tanami mine operation located in the remote Northern Territory working on a fly in fly out roster (8:6:8:6:4:3) from Perth, Darwin, Brisbane or Alice Springs.  Mine village accommodation will be provided.

Full and unrestricted eligibility for employment in Australia will be essential.
