About the Role
As a Site-Based Communications Specialist, you elevate the quality of site communications by creating and tailoring messaging and storytelling to what matters most to our teams on the ground. You’ll help sites land key messages, capture and create content (writing/photo/video),
and strengthen employee connection while growing and protecting our reputation through consistent, people-first storytelling.
Key Dimensions:
- Be the on-site “eyes and ears” for the Communications team, building strong relationships and staying close to what’s happening on the ground.
- Identify and develop compelling site stories that showcase people, culture, safety, performance and community impact.
- Support communications campaigns and initiatives by translating approved messages into practical, local site activation.
- Create high-quality content as needed. Write, shoot and edit (photo/video) and coordinate content capture with key stakeholders.
- Maintain a steady pipeline of usable content and story leads for internal channels and broader Communications priorities.
- Tailor messaging to site-specific audiences to improve relevance and cut-through, while keeping alignment to BHP’s narrative.
- Update and deploy communication materials across high-visibility site and village touchpoints (e.g., posters, digital screens, key info materials).
- Work closely with ER and HR site teams to support local priorities, address hotspots and strengthen employee engagement.
- Collaborate with village / Infrastructure and Services teams to leverage high-impact communication opportunities and employee experience touchpoints.
- Operate with strong judgement - ensuring communications are accurate, approved where required, and handled with care in high-risk environments.
Core Accountabilities:
- Regular travel to site to support stakeholders and deliver outcomes on the ground.
- Write sharp, site-ready communications (clear, accurate, audience-first).
- Tailor approved messages for site teams to drive cut-through.
- Find and package strong stories into quality content and site/village collateral.
- Capture and produce content (photo/video and basic editing) to a publishable standard.
- Build trust fast and be our conduit to the site.
About You
Qualifications:
- Relevant courses, degrees or on-the-job experience
Experience, Technical Competencies and Skills:
- Excellent written skills across all channels.
- Strong understanding of digital tools and platforms, both internal and external,
- Capability with video production and photography.
- Effective business partnering skills and experience.
- Strong project/time management skills.
- Ability to collaborate and build strong networks across the company.
- Issues and stakeholder management experience at all levels.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and quality-control.
- Ability to operate without supervision.
- Proactive and calm under pressure.
