Job Description
De Beers Group Science and Technology (S&T) division provides the capability for the development, production, sale, support and lifecycle management of the proprietary technology developed by the De Beers Group S&T function. As such, it requires engineering technicians to provide the requisite skills for the production, assembly, testing, fault-finding and repair of technology products used in the diamond value chain.
The Senior Test Technician role fulfils the unique requirements of providing expertise in final product testing (UAT), fault diagnostics, root cause analysis and service repairs. Technicians at this senior level must be versatile and flexible as work on prototype designs that may be complex in nature is required. It is expected that this role will lead machine and instrument test programmes and their documentation in a self-reliant manner and be capable of troubleshooting day-to-day component, PCB and wiring problems without immediate recourse to supervisory staff. It will be necessary to work directly with both internal and external customers, fellow technicians, design engineers and project leaders.
Typical Tasks
- Prototype Support
- Produce and/or modify prototype PCBs, wiring looms and wiring harnesses.
- Test and commission prototypes, and pre-production machines.
- Assist with the development of, proofread commissioning and final test procedures.
- Test, Setup, Fault Identification, and Commissioning
- Commission and/or test newly assembled parts and equipment to written procedures.
- Occasional requests to perform test or commissioning work at customer or group company sites overseas.
- Lead continuous improvement or engineering changes required for test procedures.
- Return to Base Repair or Upgrade of Modules and Instruments
- Diagnose faults and carry out repairs in a structured way, including component level PCB repairs.
- Keep records of faults and report on trends, making suggestions for improvements.
- Upgrade modules or instruments with new hardware or software.
- Co-ordinate return and repair logistics with other relevant staff within the production and supply chain departments.
- Remote and On-site Service and Support
- Provide remote assistance to customers for fault identification and resolution.
- Co-ordinate spares requirements with the other relevant staff.
- Provide emergency support to any customer overseas sites as required; ability to travel at short notice is important.
- Install new modules or instruments at customer’s premises, also providing training to customers where required.
- Documentation
- Write procedural documents such as SOPs, Service Bulletins or Work Instructions.
- Raise problem reports relating to product design or quality issues.
- Health and Safety
- Write Safe Standards of Work and Risk Assessment documents.
- Ensure own working environment complies with all Legal and De Beers UK policy guidelines related to Health, Safety and Environmental issues.
Qualifications
- Qualifications and Experience
- ONC / HNC / diploma / degree in electronics, electrical engineering, systems engineering or control & instrumentation or a similar related field.
- Experience in a Test and Service environment is essential.
- Multidisciplinary experience across electronic, electrical and mechanical fields will be advantageous.
- Knowledge & Technical Skills
- Full familiarity with manual test equipment (oscilloscopes, multi-meters, analysers, etc.).
- Ability to rework multilayer boards preferable.
- Computer literate, ability to create technical documentation/procedures using the MS Office suite.
- Conversant with computer programming fundamentals.
- Good communicator with strong customer focus and service skills.
