Role Details
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design Engineer – Secondary Systems to support the delivery of protection, control, automation, and communications design across HV and renewable energy projects.
You will be involved across the full project lifecycle, from concept and design through to commissioning, working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver concept and detailed secondary system designs, including studies and documentation
- Lead and participate in design reviews across protection, control, automation, and communications
- Support cross-disciplinary coordination, including HAZID, HAZOP, and safety-in-design activities
- Respond to RFIs and provide technical support to project stakeholders
- Contribute to tenders, feasibility studies, and technical investigations
- Attend and support FAT, SCAT, and commissioning activities
- Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver reliable and efficient secondary system solutions
- Assist in developing and reviewing technical specifications and standards
- Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of equipment
- Support site inspections, construction, and commissioning phases
- Drive continuous improvement in design processes and engineering practices
Skills & Experience
- 7+ years’ experience in HV transmission, substations, or renewable infrastructure (Australian experience essential)
- Background working with a Network Service Provider (NSP) or EPC/contractor environment
- Strong experience in protection & control design, including:
- Fault studies and protection coordination
- Load flow and insulation coordination
- Earthing, lightning protection, and metering systems
- Relay configuration and QoSM
- Experience with SCADA and automation systems, including:
- SCADA Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
- Signal lists, mapping, and HMI design
- Knowledge of communications systems, including:
- Network architecture and fibre systems
- Remote access, VPNs, and IT integration
- Broader secondary systems knowledge, including:
- UPS and auxiliary systems
- Cabling, termination, and security systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD
- Experience in testing and commissioning of secondary systems (highly regarded)
- Familiarity with SCADA protocols such as DNP3 and IEC 60870-5
- Understanding of cybersecurity principles for critical infrastructure
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Proven delivery of complex engineering projects from concept to completion

- Willingness to travel for site visits and project support
- Full working rights in Australia
- Based in Sydney (full-time role)
