About the Role

Title: Project Engineer – Decarbonisation Innovation & Studies

Work Location: Perth Office - Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday (Full-time)

The Project Engineer – Decarbonisation Innovation and Studies will provide essential project management and engineering support for the delivery of innovation initiatives, feasibility and concept studies supporting Fortescue's Real Zero Decarbonisation strategy. This role will work under the guidance of Senior Project Engineers and Decarb Innovation leadership to ensure successful management of innovation ideation, innovation initiatives and feasibility studies focused on decarbonisation pathways are achieved.

Operating client-side, this role will be responsible for day-to-day project coordination, data management, TCO modelling, documentation, and stakeholder facilitation required to deliver high-quality studies and innovation evaluations. The Project Engineer will be pivotal to ensuring that innovation initiatives and engineering studies run efficiently, governance frameworks are adhered to, information flows seamlessly across teams, and engineering and project deliverables are prepared to support investment decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Coordination & Administration: Manage day-to-day project activities including scheduling meetings, coordinating stakeholders across Operations, Decarb Systems Readiness and Project Delivery teams, tracking actions, and maintaining project documentation and registers.
  • Develop feasibility-level capital cost estimates, including allowances for equipment, civil works, construction support, engineering, logistics and project contingency.
  • Prepare construction resource plans covering work packages, labour requirements, plant and equipment, productivity assumptions and supporting site resources.
  • Develop integrated construction schedules by sequencing mobilisation, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, controls and commissioning activities
  • Innovation Management & Evaluation: Support the evaluation of innovation ideation through structured assessment processes, tracking innovation pipelines, and coordinating R&D initiative activities.
  • Data Management & Modelling: Consolidate and analyse project data, utilising and maintaining Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) models, cost estimates, schedule inputs, technical assumptions, and engineering metrics to support study outcomes and innovation business cases.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Develop and maintain Basis of Design documents, business requirements documentation, cost summaries, schedule updates, innovation evaluation reports, and other study deliverables. Prepare presentation materials and slide decks for leadership review and decision forums.
  • Meeting Facilitation: Organise and document project meetings, workshops, innovation reviews, and cross-functional coordination sessions. Prepare agendas, capture minutes, and follow up on action items.
  • Stakeholder Communication & Integration: Support stakeholder engagement by coordinating inputs across Operations, Decarb Systems Readiness, and Decarb Project Delivery teams. Manage communications and ensure alignment across internal and external parties.
  • Risk & Opportunity Management: Maintain risk and opportunity registers for studies and innovation initiatives, support risk assessment activities, and track mitigation actions.
  • Governance & Quality Assurance: Support the application of gated study governance processes and innovation stage-gate reviews, ensuring deliverables meet quality standards and compliance requirements.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Project Management, Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Mining, Systems), Sustainability, Business Administration, or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • 5+ years proven experience in Project Management or Project Engineering roles, with demonstrated capability in project delivery and administration.
  • Working knowledge of PMBOK framework and agile project management methodologies highly regarded.
  • Competent in MS Excel and PowerPoint – ability to manipulate data, create complex spreadsheets, develop financial models (TCO, NPV, IRR), and develop professional presentations.
  • Familiar with mining, energy, and heavy industry operations, with awareness of operational and commercial drivers.
  • Competent in MS Project for schedule development and management, competency in Primavera P6 highly regarded.
  • Experience in Project Cost Management, Schedule Management, Stakeholder & Communications Management, Risk & Opportunity Management essential
  • Experience delivering or supporting feasibility studies and engineering scoping in mining, energy, or infrastructure sectors desired.
  • Understanding of decarbonisation technologies, electrification pathways, or industrial emissions reduction approaches highly regarded.
  • Technical problem-solving and strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and present data effectively, including financial and emissions metrics.
  • Exposure to innovation management processes, R&D project delivery, or technology evaluation frameworks desirable.
  • Exposure to integrating digital and AI tools to enhance project evaluation and decision-making highly regarded.
  • Strong meeting facilitation skills and the ability to coordinate across multiple concurrent projects and diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Strong stakeholder management and engagement abilities, with strong interpersonal and communication skills across operational and corporate functions.
  • Agile-minded with adaptability and flexibility in dynamic, fast-paced, and sometimes ambiguous environments.
  • Curiosity and continuous learning orientation, with a drive to engage in personal and team development and stay current with emerging decarbonisation technologies.
  • Strong time management and organisational skills – essential for managing multiple concurrent innovation initiatives and studies.
