About the role

An opportunity has arisen to join Fortescue’s Energy Operations business unit in a pivotal senior role within commercial energy management. The ideal candidate will be an experienced commercial or technical manager in the energy or resources industry willing to step up to the challenge of being part of an innovative and results driven organisation that is leading the world in decarbonising heavy industry.

As Principal – Energy, you will lead the commercial management of high value, business critical gas and electricity agreements, applying your commercial and technical expertise to support Fortescue’s decarbonisation strategy.

This role is central to shaping and executing commercial strategies that enable the transition of Fortescue’s energy portfolio, ensuring value delivery, regulatory alignment, and risk mitigation. You will engage directly with senior leadership, regulatory bodies, and strategic counterparties, operating at the forefront of Australia’s evolving energy landscape.

We are seeking an experienced commercial or technical leader from the energy or resources sector who is motivated by innovation, decarbonisation, and delivering measurable outcomes in a complex and fast-evolving environment.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial strategy

  • Lead end-to-end procurement activities across the Energy portfolio, including supporting Fortescue’s decarbonisation initiatives.
  • Develop and execute commercial negotiation strategies for complex, high-risk, high-value energy contracts which drive value for Fortescue and our supplier partners.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to senior leadership on gas and electricity market positioning and contracting structures.
  • Identify and deliver value optimisation opportunities across Fortescue’s energy agreements.

Regulatory and market engagement

  • Operate as a key liaison in strategic internal and external meetings including the Clean Energy Regulator, the Pilbara Independent System Operator, the Economic Regulation Authority and other regulatory bodies, managing the relationship and developing expertise.
  • Develop deep expertise in relevant regulatory frameworks to support Fortescue’s energy transition.
  • Provide internal advisory support on regulatory compliance, legislative developments, and governance requirements.

Contract and relationship management

  • Oversee contract lifecycle management to ensure performance, cost efficiency, and risk mitigation.
  • Manage strategic supplier relationships to deliver value, resilience, and long-term partnership outcomes.
  • Proactively assess and manage commercial risks through robust governance and compliance practices.

Leadership

  • Build trusted relationships with internal stakeholders to ensure full alignment of procurement effort with business objectives.

  • Represent Fortescue in strategic internal and external forums.

  • Provide leadership and mentoring to team members, supporting capability development and talent management initiatives.
