About the Role
The Specialist Media role is a key position within BHP’s Corporate Affairs and Communications function in Australia, responsible for supporting the delivery of proactive and reactive media engagement that protects and enhances BHP’s reputation.
Based in Brisbane, this role supports media activity across Queensland, New South Wales and nationally, working closely with the global media team and BMA and NSW Energy Coal corporate affairs teams.
The Specialist Media will be a trusted adviser to internal stakeholders, supporting issues management, media inquiries, and storytelling aligned with BHP’s business priorities.
Key Accountabilities
- Support delivery of BHP’s media strategy through proactive and reactive media engagement across print, broadcast and digital media.
- Manage day-to-day media inquiries, including drafting responses, media releases, statements and briefing materials.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with journalists, editors and producers, particularly across Queensland-based and New South Wales media.
- Partner with Asset corporate affairs teams to coordinate media engagement, issues management and storytelling.
- Support issues and crisis management, including monitoring media coverage, identifying emerging risks and escalating appropriately.
- Provide media advice and support to senior leaders and operational stakeholders, including preparation for interviews and public engagements.
- Work closely with internal stakeholders across assets, functions and corporate teams to ensure accurate, timely and consistent media engagement.
- Assist in developing compelling media narratives that explain BHP’s strategy, operations and contribution to Australia.
- Monitor media coverage and sentiment, and contribute to reporting and insights on media performance.
- Ensure all media engagement aligns with BHP’s values, policies and governance requirements.
About You
You will be a confident media professional with strong judgment, sound writing skills and an understanding of Australia’s media landscape. You are comfortable operating in a fastpaced environment and supporting complex, often sensitive issues.
You will bring:
- Experience in media relations, journalism, corporate communications or a related field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly.
- Demonstrated experience managing media inquiries and supporting senior stakeholders.
- Good understanding of Australia’s business, political and media environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships.
- Sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- A collaborative, teambased approach and willingness to learn and develop.
Qualifications & Experience
- Relevant tertiary qualification in communications, journalism, public relations or a related discipline (desirable).
- Previous experience in a media or communications role within a corporate, government or media organisation.
- Demonstrated experience working across diverse media markets, with the ability to tailor media engagement to different operating and regulatory contexts.
- Experience in resources, infrastructure or highly regulated sectors will be well regarded.
