About the Role
Reporting to the Vice President, Tax – Minerals Australia & APAC, this role leads the Corporate Tax team within Group Tax, with responsibility for Australian tax matters as well as selected Asia-Pacific jurisdictions. In Australia, the role is also specifically accountable for the Minerals Australia Coal portfolio.
You will lead a high-performing team of senior tax professionals, requiring strong people leadership and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will drive delivery in the provision of high-quality tax advice, compliance and reporting outcomes.
The position requires deep experience managing Australian corporate tax obligations at scale, including tax effect accounting, and a demonstrated ability to navigate complex technical issues while maintaining a strong focus on risk management and governance.
As a senior member of the Group Tax team, you will act as a thought leader on tax policy and regulatory developments, interpreting emerging changes and assessing their impact on the BHP Group. You will provide advice on key capital decisions, funding and broader business strategy.
The role involves engagement with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including senior leaders in Group Tax and across the business, other functional teams and regulators. Success in the role requires the ability to communicate complex tax matters clearly and succinctly, and to influence outcomes across both technical and commercial environments.
Key Accountabilities:
The role is accountable for:
• Delivering accurate and timely corporate income tax outcomes, including tax effect accounting and the review and lodgement of income tax returns, ensuring tax positions are documented to the required standards.
• Ensuring effective risk management by identifying, assessing, and managing tax risks and uncertain tax positions, applying internal governance standards and working effectively with our regulators.
• Leading and developing a high-performing team of senior tax professionals, setting clear priorities, reviewing outputs, and embedding strong delivery discipline across reporting and compliance cycles.
• Providing tax leadership on major capital projects, M&A activity, and significant commercial arrangements, including the review of key contracts and ensuring tax support on investment processes.
• Overseeing corporate tax compliance and reporting for the Australian group, including consolidation, and ensuring delivery against internal timelines, process standards, and control requirements.
• Monitoring and interpreting changes in tax legislation and regulatory guidance, assessing the impact on the Group, and translating these into clear, actionable outcomes for the business.
• Maintaining and operating governance by adherence to key controls and governance standards, ensuring effective controls, documentation, and review processes are in place to support a low-risk tax profile and strong external assurance outcomes.
• Managing key internal and external stakeholder relationships, including senior Finance and business leaders, external auditors, and the Australian Taxation Office, ensuring clear and effective communication of complex tax matters.
• Driving continuous improvement in tax processes, systems, and data, leveraging the BHP Operating System to enhance efficiency, standardisation, and drive a continuous improvement culture.
About You
- Substantial years of experience being accountable for the provision of complex tax advice and the management of tax compliance and financial reporting processes in a highly complex multinational business and/or professional services firm.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, having led teams to deliver complex advice and on the tax risk management of inputs into complex business processes and projects.
- Demonstrated experience in leading processes that deliver on time and accurate tax reporting and tax compliance outcomes.
- Tertiary level qualification in accounting or law or relevant field.
- Deep technical knowledge of Australian corporate tax rules and regulations.
- Proficient knowledge of IFRS and tax effect accounting (AASB 112 / IAS 12).
- Demonstrated ability to identify tax issues, provide risk-managed tax advice and manage the implementation of tax advice.
- Highly proficient in tax research across multiple jurisdictions.
- Demonstrated experience leading engagement with the ATO, including as part of Justified Trust.
- Ability to evaluate tax risks and opportunities and provide accurate considered advice to business customers.
- High level Microsoft systems (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
