Job Title: Health & Safety Superintendent
Location / Roster: Remote mining operation (Northern Territory)
FIFO roster: 8/6 (site-based role)
About the Role:
Hays is partnering with a mining operator seeking an experienced Health & Safety Superintendent to lead the day-to-day implementation of safety systems across site operations.
This is a hands-on, field-based leadership role focused on engaging directly with crews, reinforcing safe behaviours, and ensuring critical controls are consistently applied. Working closely with supervisors, operators and contractors, you will play a key role in supporting safe production outcomes through active presence in the field.
Reporting to the HSE Manager, this role contributes to building a proactive safety culture through coaching, collaboration and practical risk management.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Leadership and Safety Engagement:
- Provide visible safety leadership across site, engaging regularly with crews and supervisors
- Conduct workplace inspections, safety interactions and critical control verifications
- Facilitate pre-starts, toolbox talks and safety communications
Risk Management and Compliance:
- Ensure safety procedures and controls are implemented and maintained in daily operations
- Support hazard identification, risk assessments and safe work practices in the field
- Monitor high-risk activities including working at heights, confined space, isolations and mobile equipment
- Verify compliance with site requirements and relevant legislation
Training and Capability Development:
- Coordinate and support training and verification of competency (VOC) processes
- Coach frontline teams to build capability and ownership of safety practices
- Support onboarding and ongoing safety alignment of contractors
Emergency Response and Incident Management
- Support and coordinate emergency response capability, including drills and readiness
- Participate in incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions
- Assist in maintaining site emergency preparedness
Continuous Improvement and Reporting
- Identify safety trends and emerging risks, escalating where required
- Assist with the development of practical safety improvements
- Maintain accurate records including inspections, training and incident data
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
- Demonstrated experience in a health and safety role within mining or heavy industry
- Strong understanding of operational hazards and effective risk controls
- Experience working in a field-based role within remote or site environments
- Exposure to training coordination or competency-based systems
- Experience in inspections, audits and safety interactions in active operations
- Working knowledge of WHS legislation relevant to mining
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and engage across all levels
- Well-developed organisational and reporting capability
Qualifications and Requirements:
Essential:
- Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (or equivalent)
- Relevant experience in mining, construction or heavy industry
- Current manual driver’s licence
- Valid Australian work rights
- Ability to work FIFO in a remote operational environment
Desirable:
- Experience in open cut mining operations
- Emergency Response Team (ERT) experience or training
- Training and Assessment qualification (TAE) or similar experience
- Incident investigation training (e.g. ICAM)
- First aid qualification
Working Conditions:
- Site-based role in a remote mining environment
- Regular work outdoors in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions
- Requires frequent walking, standing and navigating uneven terrain
- Involvement in emergency response activities as required
- Physically active role with moderate manual handling requirements
