About the role

We are looking for an experienced HR Data Engineer to join the Rio Tinto’s People Data & Insights team, building trusted cloud data products that support strategic workforce decisions. You will join a global team working at the intersection of Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, Data Science and Human Resources, helping deliver trusted people data products that inform strategic decisions across recruitment, retention, workforce planning, wellbeing and engagement.

Reporting to the Manager Data Engineering, you will work with stakeholders, analysts, data scientists and technology teams to understand requirements, design fit-for-purpose data solutions, and build reliable, scalable and maintainable data products in complex enterprise environments. Your responsibilities include:

  • Designing, building, deploying and operating scalable data pipelines and data products using cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
  • Developing and optimising data engineering solutions using Databricks, Spark, Python, SQL and modern lakehouse patterns.
  • Translating stakeholder requirements into well-modelled, trusted datasets that support analytics, reporting, data science and operational decision-making.
  • Applying strong data modelling practices across curated, integrated and consumption-ready data layers.
  • Using GitHub or similar source control platforms, CI/CD practices and automated testing to promote reliable, repeatable and production-ready delivery while making work visible, reusable, and easy for others to build on.
  • Solving data quality, integration, performance and reliability challenges across complex source systems and enterprise data platforms.
  • Engage with stakeholders to clarify business problems, test assumptions, explain technical trade-offs and ensure delivered solutions meet real business needs.
  • Provide coaching, knowledge transfer and support to help teams adopt and sustain the data products and engineering practices developed.

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Degree Qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems or similar field
  • Strong experience designing, developing and supporting data pipelines, data platforms or data products in cloud environments such as AWS or Azure.
  • Hands-on engineering experience with Databricks, Spark, Python and/or SQL, including performance tuning, debugging and production support.
  • Solid understanding of data modelling, data integration patterns, dimensional modelling, Lakehouse architecture and designing datasets for analytics consumption.
  • Experience using GitHub or similar source control platforms, with CI/CD, automated testing, branching strategies and peer review practices.
  • Proven ability to mentor and coach others, share technical expertise, and solve complex problems.

You will bring strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions, alongside experience delivering data engineering solutions in cloud-based environments.
