About the Company

George Fisher Mine (GFM) is a large-scale underground zinc-lead-silver operation based in Mt Isa, QLD. George Fisher is one of Australia's most geotechnically challenging underground base-metal mines because it combines a deep, high-stress environment with a large, steeply dipping orebody that is mined using longhole open stoping. The operation is a key strategic asset for Glencore globally. Glencore is also progressing the Blackstar open pit project in Mt Isa. This brownfield expansion is scheduled to move into execution in 2027.

About the Role

The Geotechnical Superintendent leads the operational geotechnical team to provide safe, timely and practical geotechnical support to underground mining activities. The role provides leadership across field inspections, operational risk management, ground support compliance, monitoring, reconciliation and team supervision so that ground-related risks are managed proactively and geotechnical support is embedded in day-to-day execution. The position also coordinates geotechnical priorities, supervises field-based support and builds practical capability within the geotechnical team in support of the mine plan and business plan. Ideally the position would be residentially based in Mt Isa with an attractive package on offer to attract the right person. However, consideration may be given to FIFO ex Brisbane or Townsville.

Experience / Requirements

• Tertiary qualification in Geotechnical Engineering or related discipline
• Significant underground metalliferous mining experience in operational geotechnical roles.
• Demonstrated experience in underground inspections, support compliance, monitoring systems, excavation performance and ground risk management.
• Strong understanding of operational geotechnical hazards and practical controls in an underground mining environment.
• Experience leading or supervising technical teams in a production-facing environment.
• Strong ability to balance field responsiveness with technical rigour and risk management.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, particularly with operations crews and frontline leaders.
• Adhere to the Ground Control Management Plan, the Queensland Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act, and associated regulations.
• Management of fatal hazards protocols relating to ground strata failure, and inrush and outburst
• Experience with Geotechnical software packages (E.G. RocScience, Leapfrog, FLAC 3D).
