Engineering Manager - Green Metals
Fortescue
Job Description
About Us
Fortescue is both a proud West Australian company and a global green solutions business. We are recognised for our culture, innovation and industry-leading development of infrastructure, mining assets and green energy initiatives.
Our Opportunity
Work Location: Perth Office, 66 St Georges Terrace - Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.
Roster: Monday to Friday
The Engineering Manager (LEDER) provides technical leadership for the end-to-end design and development of an industrial-scale hydrometallurgical Green Iron Plant, supporting sustainable ironmaking and the transition to net zero. Reporting to the Program Director, the role leads multidisciplinary engineering across the full plant lifecycle—from concept and feasibility to detailed design and execution readiness—while integrating emerging DER technology developed by an internal R&D team. It ensures alignment between innovation and practical, scalable plant design, manages key interfaces, and maintains engineering integrity across internal teams and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering inputs across Scoping, Pre-Feasibility, and Feasibility Studies, ensuring high-quality deliverables aligned to stage-gate governance and technical assurance
- Define process flowsheets, design basis, and plant configurations, including development of PFDs, P&IDs, mass balances, and layouts
- Support capital cost estimates, schedules, and execution strategies to enable robust project development decisions
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams across process, mechanical, electrical, control, and plant design disciplines
- Drive process design, modelling, optimisation, and equipment selection, ensuring technically robust and scalable solutions
- Manage external engineering support, licensors, and technology providers, ensuring quality, integration, and technical assurance of delivered work
- Establish and manage technical interfaces across process units, utilities, DER technologies, and balance of plant systems, ensuring seamless integration
- Identify and manage interface and design risks, leading cross-functional workshops and technical reviews to resolve issues early
- Support transition from study to execution, including engineering delivery strategy, commissioning, and operational readiness planning.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Process, or Metallurgy) with ~20+ years’ experience delivering large-scale industrial or resources projects, ideally in alumina refining or steelmaking
- Extensive expertise in plant design, including facility layout optimisation, material handling, process modelling, simulation, scale-up, and integration of electrification and energy systems
- Proven experience across full project lifecycles, from early-stage studies (Scoping, PFS, FS) through to execution, commissioning, and operational readiness
- Strong background working across both owner’s teams and EPC/design environments, managing contractors, consultants, and engineering deliverables
- Deep technical capability in process design, flowsheet development, modelling, optimisation, and large-scale capital project delivery (>$500M)
- Demonstrated experience in greenfield plant design, commissioning, ramp-up, and performance optimisation in complex processing environments
- Strong understanding of stage-gate project development, technical assurance, process safety (HAZOP/CHAZOP), and risk management frameworks
- Highly desirable expertise in alumina refining (Bayer process), hydrometallurgical systems, high-temperature/high-pressure processes, and emerging technology integration
- Proven ability to lead technology selection, equipment specification, and performance validation, with experience applying advanced analytics and simulation tools (e.g. Syscad).
