Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa. Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

Your impact

Reporting to the Superintendent Mechanical & Structural Engineering, the Engineer, Mechanical role supports the maintenance, reliability, integrity and performance of site fixed plant and related infrastructure across the operation.

You will play a key role in ensuring mechanical assets such as conveyors, ball mills, vibrating screens, compressors, pumps etc operate safely and efficiently. The role focuses on asset integrity, asset improvement,  and management of classified plant, supporting safe and reliable operations through effective engineering practices, inspections and risk management.

Working closely with operations, maintenance teams and technical stakeholders, you will contribute to continuous improvement of the site fixed plant, asset performance and operational efficiency.

As part of our team you will

  • Provide mechanical engineering support to ensure safe, compliant and efficient operation of fixed plant infrastructure
  • Conduct detailed engineering calculations, analyse data, to provide engineering solutions for complex equipment problems.
  • Lead problem solving teams in identifying, designing, and Implementing improvement initiatives.
  • Development of engineering scopes of work (SoW), and provide technical guidance to the execution teams.
  • Identify value creation opportunities and prioritize mechanical equipment improvement projects
  • Provide prompt and effective support in resolving mechanical engineering issues in fixed plant operating environments
  • Offer technical support to the wider maintenance teams in various mechanical engineering aspects
  • Conduct inspections, safety audits and condition assessments of fixed plants assets
  • Maintain accurate records of engineering activities, inspections and performance metrics
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams, to enhance asset performance

Prerequisites for your success in the role

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant trade certification with additional vocational qualifications
  • Must have experience working in a fixed plant Mechanical Engineering team in either a heavy industrial or mining environment
  • Strong understanding of asset integrity, and engineering principles, classified plant and statutory compliance requirements
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis work process methods and tools
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capability in operational environments
  • Understanding of safety systems, engineering standards and risk management processes
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams
  • Exposure to underground mining operations and gold processing plant highly desirable
  • Understanding of Newmont's Risk Management System (RMS) and Fatality Risk Management (FRM) framework or comparable systems highly desirable
