This is a site‑based role at Portland Aluminium Smelter, Victoria where you will be a permanent procurement presence supporting a growing capital portfolio. Reporting to the Procurement & Contracts Manager based in Perth, this role will have Single Point of Accountability (SPA) in managing all activities associated with sourcing and supply of all materials, equipment and services and associated contracts managed for allocated Capital Projects at Portland Aluminium.
This role drives competitive advantage by aligning project and procurement strategies, executing developed strategies, contracts, purchase orders, processes improvements, and policy compliance. The incumbent needs to work closely with project engineering SPA’s to ensure congruence between project objectives and procurement plans.
The Procurement Specialist - Capital works with project customers and suppliers, to drive capital intensity reduction, ensure project schedules are met and contract compliance and deliverables are achieved.
In this role, your key responsibilities will be:
- Owning the end‑to‑end sourcing and contract award process for capital projects — from procurement planning and tendering through to contractor selection, contract finalisation and onboarding.
- Working with the on‑site capital and project teams, engineering partners, Legal, and the broader Perth‑based procurement function, ensuring contractors comply with Alcoa terms and deliver to scope, schedule and budget.
- Requiring you to be highly self‑empowered and outcome‑driven, managing multiple tender packages concurrently, prioritising competing deadlines, and confidently engaging senior stakeholders.
- Being part of a small but growing capital procurement team at Portland Aluminium, with strong visibility, autonomy, and the opportunity to grow into a site‑lead role as the function continues to expand.

What you can bring to the role
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Strategic Procurement, Supply Chain Management, Purchasing, Business or Engineering is beneficial.
- Several years’ experience as a Procurement Buyer, within smelter industry or heavy industry (e.g. mining, manufacturing/production, oil & gas).
- Ability to work in a team environment, providing support to team members, management and customers.
- Drive a solution approach to problems, working collaborative with other team members or customers.
- Ability to deal with high volume, low value procurement requirements to deliver requirements on time.
- Skills and expertise in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, data mining, analytical and query tools.
- A sound working knowledge of Procurement and business processes, clear and strong communication, attention to detail, taking initiative and ability to work unsupervised.
- Demonstrated influencing capability and skills as the role will work directly with internal customers such as Project Managers.
- High levels of autonomy and decision‑making confidence, able to work independently on site, drive outcomes, and guide stakeholders.
- Sound commercial and contract knowledge, including familiarity with terms and conditions, supplier performance management, and compliance requirements.
- System and process capability, with experience (or ability to quickly learn) procurement systems such as SAP Ariba (tendering) and Oracle (purchase orders).
- Results‑focused mindset, comfortable managing multiple tender packages simultaneously and prioritising critical work.

Our Portland Smelter is a joint venture between Alcoa of Australia (55%), CITIC (22.5%) and Marubeni Aluminium Australia (22.5%). Alcoa manages the day-to-day operations at the smelter and we produce approximately 19 per cent of Australia’s total aluminium production in Portland.
